\"\"<\/a>If you are designing a common\u00a0feature it is always a good idea to\u00a0take Google’s solution as a starting point. But you still need to test it! Even Google can get things wrong. Here is an example\u00a0how.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our UX company<\/a><\/span>\u00a0is working for\u00a0an e-sports\u00a0company. One of their service is a software that\u00a0enables individual game server owners to show ads to their gamers and get money for each impression.<\/p>\n

An\u00a0important feature was to show some time dependent data (number of impressions)\u00a0and enable users to check the data within various time periods.<\/p>\n

UX Research and redesign<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Then we user tested the designs.\u00a0Why don’t you try it?! Here is the test task:<\/p>\n

How would you check the traffic of this month? Where would you click?<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Unikrn<\/a><\/p>\n

Well, you probably failed, just as all users on the user tests failed on this. They all thought that the ” Day | Week | Month ” buttons will take them to the desired result. But in fact these buttons are designed to set the frequency of sampling of\u00a0the graph:\"Unikrn<\/a><\/p>\n

Users misunderstand these buttons in Google Analytics just as badly as in our design.\u00a0After this research finding we decided to add a little tweak that may help: an explanation text. …user tests revealed\u00a0pretty fast that this didn’t solve the problem. Why? Because people\u00a0won’t read the explanation text if they think they get the buttons\u00a0right. They have no reason to read.<\/p>\n

\"Unikrn<\/a><\/p>\n

At this point it is important to note\u00a0that these buttons implement a\u00a0secondary feature for our users. This fact together with the other fact that they were misleading led us to the decision to dismiss this feature altogether, for a lighter and simpler user experience.<\/p>\n

Here is the final design without the misleading buttons.\"Unikrn<\/a><\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you are designing a common\u00a0feature it is always a good idea to\u00a0take Google (or other unikrn) as a starting point. But you still need to test it!<\/p>\n
