This model illustrates the different ways in which companies use design. They based the Design Ladder on a hypothesis that has seen confirmation time and time again since. Non-Design<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Design forms a latent part of the teams responsible for product development and the task not handled by trained designers. The team members\u2019 ideas about good function and aesthetics usually decide the outcome, while users\u2019 perspective plays little or no role in the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2. Design as Form-Giving<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Many designers use the term \u201cstyling\u201d for this process. Professional designers may carry out the task but typically people with other professional backgrounds handle it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3. Design as Process<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Design does not mean the final appearance but a process integrated from an early stage of its development. Both economic viability and users&#8217; needs and pains drive the solution. This setup requires the involvement and collaboration of product managers, product owners, business analysts, developers, marketing experts, researchers, and of course, designers etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4: Design as Strategy <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>The design professionals work with the company\u2019s owners\/management to rethink the business model. They focus on the design process in relation to the company\u2019s business strategy and its desired future position in the market.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>Why is design good for businesses?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>A higher placement on the Design Ladder correlates with a positive effect on earnings. Understand the challenge<\/h4>\n<p><span>First, understand why we need innovation, as the journey starts here. Usually, the need for business model innovation results from one of the following objectives:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Satisfy existing but unanswered market needs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Bring new technologies, products, or services to market<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Improve, disrupt or transform an existing market with a better business model<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>To create an entirely new market<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>In this step, strive to discuss the company situation with its stakeholders to discover different the current state and perspectives. Whatever the case, start by understanding the challenges the organization faces.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>2. Understand how your business works<\/h4>\n<p><span>In the second step, understand better how your business works (or assume how it should work, if it doesn\u2019t exist yet) in order to deliver value. Analyzing the existing business model forms the basis of achieving a successful innovation. Understand the context and your position<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span>After creating the BMC, understand the environment in which the business operates. Understand your (potential) customers<\/h4>\n<p><span>After the third step, go deeper. Identify all your (potential) customer segments by filling in the BMC. Now choose your main customer segment and focus on it. To help yourself with this process, start by creating a persona. It will give your customer segment a personality with which you can empathize more easily. Again, assumptive means you likely haven\u2019t done any research yet. You would be making a terrible mistake. Don\u2019t. Combining field observation with interviews gets the best insights. You might find it useful. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Your research should answer the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>What <\/span><b>jobs<\/b><span> does our customer try to do in their work or life?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>What <\/span><b>pains<\/b><span> does our customer face before, during, and after, or even completely prevents them from doing so? <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>What <\/span><b>gains<\/b><span> does our customer face after getting a job done? <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>To organize the insights you will get from the interview, use the Value Proposition Canvas. It helps clarify your understanding of the main customer segment. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>On the left, we have the Value Map. This helps describe how you intend to create value for that customer. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>5. Focus on problems worth solving<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span>Now you have a better understanding of the jobs your customers are trying to do, their pains and gains. Next, prioritize them. Define your value proposition<\/h4>\n<p><span>For the next step, identify the value you wish to create for your main customers: your value proposition. An outstanding value proposition should focus on the most important jobs, pains, and gains of your customer. The left side of the Value Proposition Canvas comes into play here. This will only happen when you address important jobs, alleviate extreme pains and create essential gains that they care about.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>7.Ideate for solutions<\/h4>\n<p><span>Even though we don\u2019t have a clearly defined value proposition yet, we do have the basic building blocks. We can use the top ideas from our Value Proposition canvas to quickly sketch multiple value propositions, using the Ad-Lib below. But don\u2019t stop there, try to describe what features a product will have, what structure a service will have, etc. In the case of digital products, look for features that will directly address your customer\u2019s pains and help them carry out their jobs. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4>8. Prioritise solutions<\/h4>\n<p><span>After the brainstorm session, you should have a multitude of solutions and ideas which will require prioritization. Prototype solutions<\/h4>\n<p><span>Next, build a prototype to bring your ideas to life. Prototyping means making quick and rough models of your ideas to explore alternatives. Of the many prototyping techniques, start with some quick hand-drawn paper sketches. They will allow you to quickly explore radically different directions for the same idea before refining one in particular. Then go digital by building wireframes and interactive prototypes, ranging from low to high fidelity. Test solutions<\/h4>\n<p><span>Last but not least, test your solutions with real customers from your potential target group. Conducting interviews and user tests will indicate if the customers would use the solution you have in mind. You\u2019ll still need to assess its market potential in order to determine the viability of the business model. By \u201cmarket potential\u201d we mean:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Market size<\/b><span> \u2013 The number of potential customers and the value of the market. It will give you insights about the sales potential of your product or service.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Competition<\/b><span> \u2013 Gauge market competition, determine the market position of various competitors and plan strategies to tackle them when the time comes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Customer segmentation<\/b><span> \u2013 Determine the size of your main (potential) target group and if it has clear segments with different drivers of demand, price sensitivity, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>These quantitative market insights will help determine the intensity of the need which your product or service addresses, the size of your potential target group, how much they would pay for your solution, how the threat of your competitors, etc. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Takeaways for your business<\/h2>\n<p><span>The success of any new product or service ultimately depends on human motivations and behavior.
